Alexander Ballingall was born at Largo in Fife, the son of a linen weaver. He worked as an engraver before becoming a marine and landscape painter.
He was a watercolourist who specialised in views of east coast harbours, taking care over details of shipping. His style is sometimes tight but often fresh and rugged.
He painted from Shetland to Galloway and also spent some time in Venice, working on a large scale.
