Henry Garland (1834-1913)

Painter of genre, landscapes and animals, but renowned for his scenes of these in the Scottish Highlands. In fact he was born in Winchester, England. He exhibited widely in London, especially in the Royal Academy but also in the Suffolk Street Gallery and the British Institution. He painted for at least seven different dealers in various locations each with a different pseudonyms.

He painted genre scenes, animal paintings and Scottish landscapes, invariably involving cattle drovers and herds of cattle in Highland landscapes with lochs and mist covered mountains. Some of his cattle paintings show a drover on a white horse and include a border collie dog.
