Born Greenock. Landscape painter in oil and watercolour. In early life he had been a postman but turned to art in later life. Although mainly self-taught, he studied for a short time in Paris. He began exhibiting in 1885. Painted widely around Glasgow, particularly views of the Clyde and in the vicinity of Gourock. His strength was in capturing the  light on water, often with the peaks of Arran beyond. Like his contemporary James Kay, he was knowledgeable about the many types of craft then to be seen on the Clyde .
