Cosmo Alexander was born in Aberdeen, the son and pupil of the painter John Alexander, a loyal Jacobite Cosmo had to leave Scotland in 1745 and settled in Rome. He visited the Hague and America where he painted a number of portraits., latterly returning to Edinburgh where he died in 1772.
