William James Affleck Shepherd (1866–1946) was an English illustrator and cartoonist, known mainly for anthropomorphic animal drawings. He rarely used his first forename – most of his works are simply signed "J.A.S."

Shepherd was a keen huntsman and self-taught cartoonist who specialised in humorous anthropomorphic drawings of animals. He worked with the cartoonist Alfred Bryan on Moonshine, and contributed illustrations to Strand Magazine, London Illustrated News, Punch and Sporting and Dramatic News. He illustrated a number of children's books, including Zig Zag Fables (1897), Uncle Remus (1901), Wanders in Monsterland (1901), Nights with Uncle Remus (1903), The Three Jovial Puppies (1907), The Life of a Foxhound (1910) and The Story of Chanticleer (1913). He lived in Charlwood, Surrey and Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
